Side Effects To Anti Anxiety Medication
Anti anxiety medication are useful in calming and relaxing the symptoms of excessive anxiety. They have chemicals that work by acting on the nerves of the brain. People suffering from anxiety most commonly use clinical medicines as they are most helpful in relieving anxiety than any other type of treatment for anxiety disorder. But anti anxiety medications have many side effects. It is only due to their side effects that people then try to opt for natural help.
The side effects seen in users of anti anxiety medication are oversleeping, lethargy, fatigue, pain in the body and dry mouth etc. Anti anxiety medicines can be typed as; Benzodiazepines, beta blockers, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants.
Benzodiazepines which work very fast and relief symptoms within one day have the most side effects. The most common side effects of these drugs include sleepiness, depression, lethargy, fatigue, confusion, light headedness, less attention, disorientation, crying, headache, trembling, weakness, blurry image, changes in heart beat and skin rash etc.
The beta blockers are prescribed to patients as they are helpful in curing the physical symptoms of anxiety. Their side effects comprise diarrhea, slow heart beat, impotency, rash and loss of sexual drive. People having diabetes with high blood pressure and those having poor circulation in their hands or feet should not use beta blockers. They increase the risk of heart attacks as they lower the amount of good cholesterol and increase the amount of bad cholesterol. They also raise the amount of triglycerides, fatty materials in the blood stream which have almost the same risk of heart attack as by cholesterol.
SSRIs are prescribed because they have fewer side effects than other types of anxiety medication. SSRIs can cause nausea, head ache, drowsiness, weight gain or loss, increased or decreased appetite and changes in sexual functioning. They make the patient feel depressed and hopeless which can cause thoughts of suicide.
MAOIs are drugs that have a restricted diet as they can interact with food. Although they are not used a lot but they can be helpful in some situations. Their common side effects are weight gain, dizziness, drowsiness, sexual dysfunction and insomnia. They can have birth defects so they should be avoided by pregnant women.
Tricyclic antidepressants work by affecting certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Sleep disturbance, sudden low blood pressure upon standing, weight gain, sexual dysfunction and mental disturbance.
Therefore, any medicine taken should be properly studied and discussed with the doctor as every patient will require a different type of medicine.
