Researchers studied the “pre-treatment severity of nicotine dependence” of individuals in three studies that occurred from 1989 to 2006. Researchers found that the number of individuals who are highly addicted to nicotine rose 17.5 percent during the years of the study. “Severe nicotine addiction had gone up between 1989 and 2006 and the percentage of smokers classified as highly nicotine dependent, as much as 32 percent,” according to statistics obtained from the study.

Unfortunately, researchers were unable to provide any reasoning behind the increase of nicotine addiction, but were able to conclusively explain that individuals with less of a nicotine addiction were much more successful at quitting smoking and found doing so easier than others with higher nicotine addictions.

Smoking Cessation Drugs

According to the medical journal the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), there are several stages and pharmaceutical aids for an individual when quitting smoking. According to physicians, at the stage of actionable cessation, nicotine replacement therapies will be abundant. Some of these drugs include:

Antidepressant litigation attorney Karen Barth Menzies and her partner, Ronald Goldman, filed suit today alleging Zoloft-maker, Pfizer, misled physicians and the public regarding Zoloft’s safety and efficacy, particularly with regard to suicidality and withdrawal symptoms caused by the drug’s use.

Today’s consumer protection lawsuit was filed in Superior Court in downtown Los Angeles (case number BC318871). The suit details Pfizer’s actions and omissions that downplayed Zoloft’s risks and exaggerate Zoloft’s alleged benefits. Pfizer did so, the complaint alleges, by suppressing evidence concerning: (1) Zoloft’s lack of efficacy compared to placebos in treating conditions for which Zoloft is prescribed; (2) Zoloft’s propensity to induce withdrawal and dependency; (3) the risk of increased suicidal and violent impulses in adult, child and adolescent Zoloft users; and (4) Zoloft’s causing other side effects such as convulsions and psychosis.

The Plaintiff, Roberta Madison, is a nurse and doctor of Public Health. She has brought the action as a Private Attorney General on behalf of all California residents who have been misled about Zoloft. Last month, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer filed a similar lawsuit on behalf of all “aggrieved consumers” in the state of New York related to the drug Paxil. California’s Unfair Competition Law provides that a private citizen may act as Attorney General on behalf of consumers.

Additionally, we have seen many doctors who were unaware of Zoloft’s serious side effects and consequently mis-diagnosed them. Where the public health is at stake, there is no room for secrecy and deception.”

Does the public have a different standard depending on the drug of choice and the affliction? Brooke Shields, Shawn Colvin and Roseanne Barr have all spoken out about their battles with depression or bi-polar disorder and their use of antidepressants and other medications to treat their illness. The world rallied around Brooke Shields when Tom Cruise criticized her for using antidepressants to treat her post-partum depression.

Linda Hamilton appeared on Oprah to give credence to bi-polar disorder and revealed her use of medications. Why is this different in the public’s eye?

Our world has become complicated and with it the use of medications has escalated. Rain, was on a cocktail of medications including Klonopin, Restoril, Ambien, Sinequan, Effexor, Norco and Oxycontin for a decade to treat insomnia, anxiety, depression and pain. She did not doctor shop and took them only as prescribed. Yet she describes her addiction as more horrifying than had she been on heroin or cocaine. “I had no idea that prescription pills could be so addictive,” states Rain. “I really wonder how many millions are caught in the same trap and have no concept that the pills they are taking could leave them facing horrific withdrawals,” claims Rain.

Ironically, many will walk out of treatment with a handful of prescriptions, completely unaware that they could be facing another withdrawal down the road. Rain says this is all too common and for decades one drug has been used to treat the addiction to another. “Anxiety medication is very similar to alcohol yet much more addictive,” claims Rain. “I see all too often how those of us that have chosen pills think it isn’t really the same as drinking or taking illegal drugs, yet we are the ones that spend a much longer period of time in withdrawals. I spent ninety days in a drug and alcohol treatment center and watched people going through alcohol, heroin, crystal methamphetamine and cocaine withdrawals and then leave in the allotted 28 days. It was quite humbling,” states Rain.

For anyone in the entertainment industry, the long hours and travel schedule can certainly wreak havoc on their ability to sleep or live a normal life. How many will turn to a sleeping pill to get the critical rest without awareness that it can cause short term memory loss, thus making it difficult to memorize lines?

When Brooke Shields stated the antidepressant she was taking was difficult to stop, the public offered encouragement. When Jim Carrey quit his Prozac, he was a hero to many and deemed a beacon to living a drug free life.

In her novel, Rain writes of her hallucinations and behavior while on her medications. “If anyone could have heard what was going on in my mind I would have been vilified as well,” Rain says. “I know first hand how we can be altered by a drug and it can completely change our personality and bring many demons to the surface, some real and some imagined.”

The public has a history of revering and condemning those in the spotlight. Maybe its time we all looked in our medicine cabinets before we place judgment on another. We each will face our own actions and errors in judgment, but unlike celebrities, the general public has the opportunity to do it quietly, without public scrutiny.

In some patients, the movement of the ball and socket against each other can cause metal particles to be released into the body, causing hip pain, swelling or walking problems that may require surgery.

In a March 2010 article published by the New York Times, some health experts stated that DePuy and Johnson & Johnson should have moved sooner to recall the two hip implants. The Food and Drug Administration received more than 400 reports of problems with DePuy hip replacements before they were recalled in the U.S. Several DuPuy patients have filed lawsuits against the company, alleging that it knew about problems with the hip devices more than two years before the recall notice was issued.

Both of these Paxil side effects are serious enough that the drug is not a good choice for many people. However, these people often still take the drug, regardless of whether it is deemed to be bad for them or not. They assume that the side effects will not be a problem for them, and they are something that only happens to other people. Topamax was approved by the FDA in 1996 for the treatment of seizures caused by epilepsy. In 2004, the agency also approved Topamax to treat migraine headaches.

In April 2010, the manufacturers of Topamax pled guilty to promoting the drug to treat conditions such as bipolar disorder, weight loss and alcohol dependency, according to the U.S. Department of Justice [District of Massachusetts, No. 03-11445-WGY and No. 04-11886-WGY]. The companies agree to pay $ 81 million in fines for this illegal off-label promotion, which included hiring physicians to travel with drug representatives and talk with doctors about prescribing Topamax for conditions which it was not approved to treat by the FDA.
