Cat Anxiety Medication
Anxiety is not confined to humans only but animals too have fears and emotions. Anxiety disorder in cats includes the fear to get separated form the owner, the fear of other animals living in the home, and the fear of thunderstorms etc. While there is very little research done about veterinary medicine and diseases, the medical practitioners explains that such anxieties can occur in cats that have had very storing bonding with their owners but have now been separated from their owners or have been moved form on house to the other.
Symptoms of Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety is fear or worries and in animals it can be felt with their gestures and their body language. Usually this disorder occurs when the cat is separated from the owner or from a companion animal with whom it had strong bonding. The common symptom is that the animal persists and tries to be with the owner all the time. The cat also insists on being stick with the owner all the time and even follows him from room to room. The cat may also show dismay when the owners leave the home. The cat often does not let the owners leave the home by trying to get in between the owner and the door. Sometimes animals often fear from noises like thunderstorms. It has also been observed that some breeds have greater tendency to develop anxiety disorders than the others, especially the fear of noise.
Treatment for anxiety in cats
The veterinary medicine and pharmacology is yet in its developing stages, however, there are some medications which have been recommended widely to treat anxiety in cats. Cat anxiety medication includes Benzodiazepines, Buspirone Hydrochloride, and Fluoxetine.
Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines have a very good capability to treat anxiety in animals too. Drugs like diazepam and alprozolam is often prescribed to treat anxiety in cats and dogs. The drug has different dosages for cats. The commonly available dosages are 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg. Benzodiazepines are often prescribed when the animal has fear for noises and large crowds.
Busporine Hydrochloride (Buspar)
Busporine Hydrochloride is one of the most recommended drugs to treat anxiety disorders in animals. Although Benzodiazepines are proven to treat the anxiety disorder effectively, Buspar is often preferred to benzodiazepines as the symptoms used to recur once the dosages of benzodiazepines are stopped.
Fluoxetine
This drug is available under the brand name Prozac and is widely recommended to treat a variety of medical condition in dogs and cats. Eli Lilly, the producer company of the drug, released a version of the drug in 2007 made especially for the animals. Since then the drugs is one of the most prescribed anti-anxiety medication for cats.
Antianxiety Medication for Excessive Cat Urinating
It is sprayed on surfaces rather than administered to the cat as a medication. It may take up to 1 month to produce any results. Herbal treatments for feline anxiety include: Passiflora incarnata, argentum nitricum.
When The Anxiety Strikes And After
Ensure that you carry with you your anxiety medication (which is prescribed by your doctor) and you take it as advised. Keep in mind that anxiety attacks are caused by chemical imbalances in the body which can be controlled.
